Education Exploration

At this stage, based on their previous exploration and discoveries during the career counseling process, students should be able to narrow down their most interesting career options and identify 2 - 3 occupations as tentative career choices.

The objective of this exercise is to help students gather relevant information about education and training required in their tentative future career, and therefore support them to plan their educational paths.

It is important to encourage students to use various sources of information to gather information. Reading catalogs, using the internet, and talking with the career counselor, parents or other adults are some advisable methods for searching for information Also, one way to get hands-on information is to interview someone who is studying or working in that particular field.

Once students have gathered all the information on the table, they can better conceptualize relevant information regarding tentative education and career choices and make comparisons between them.

Completing this exercise requires plenty of time and therefore it can be applied in classroom counseling or as a homework assignment. Career counselors have an important role in guiding students to use sources of information that are objective.

The questions on the table will help you on your exploration. Search for information and fill in the table. Use various sources of information such as catalogs, internet, and talking with your career counselor, parents or other adults.
