What career would you like have more information about? 

Often the most current and relevant information about a career field is not available online or in books. The best information comes from people who are actually working in that career field.

An informational interview is an informal discussion with someone working in a field that interests you. It is an effective tool to explore careers in addition to reading books, using the Internet and going through job descriptions.

You may feel shy about making arrangements to talk with people you don't know about their work. However, most people actually enjoy taking a few moments out of their day to give advice to someone with an interest in their field.

How to find an interviewee? Ask your family, friends, neighbors, teachers and career counselors. People you already know, even if they are not in fields of interest to you, can lead you to people who are.

What kind of questions should be asked? You can ask about such topics as a typical working day, required education or training in the field, and good sides of the job. You can also ask the interviewee to tell his own story about making a career choice. Use some of the following questions or make up your own. The main point is that you choose questions that help you in your career choice.

Questions to ask in an informational interview:

ü  How did you become interested in this field?

ü  How long have you worked here?

ü  What is a typical working day like for you?

ü  What kind of tasks do you have?

ü  What do you like most about your work?

ü  What do you like least about your work?

ü  What kind of education or training does your job require?

ü  What kind of skills and knowledge are important in your job?

ü  Are there any requirements set by the career (health, etc.)?

ü  How much is the entry-level salary for this field?

ü  How do you see the future in this field?

ü  What advice would you give someone who is considering this type of job?
