My Learning Journey

The objective of this exercise is to facilitate students to express their most important learning experiences during their school years, life and – later on - career. Also, the objective is to help students to see important people around them who may have influenced their lives, and how their dreams and plans concerning future career may have changed over the years. In addition, learning journey enables to picture future plans and goals more concretely.

Learning journey can be a timeline, path, mind map or a report/letter. Encourage students to use text, pictures and colors to make their learning journeys vivid and descriptive.

Learning journey is a comprehensive exercise and can be applied in F2F counseling and classroom counseling. It can also be used (partly) as a homework assignment, because it takes some time to accomplish it. The age of the students determines how profound the learning journey will be.

Guidelines

Explain the purpose and objectives of drawing a learning journey to the students. Show them an example of a learning journey, e.g. your own learning journey, and tell what kind of things can be told or described at different stages of the journey.

Give students a certain time limit to draw their learning journeys, but allow them enough time to think all the aspects.

Form groups of 2 – 3 students and let them show and share their learning journeys with other members of the group. Afterwards you can ask some additional questions:

·        How did you feel about drawing your learning journey?

·        Does this help you to recognize better different stages of your life and some learning experiences?

·        What are some of the highlights of your learning journey?

You can collect the learning journeys for your own information and return them back to students next time. Tell students to save their learning journeys. During school years, they can be reviewed and updated.
